Well, Kevin's junior high school career is off to a good start.

Carlos doesn't come off too well in this story, but it could have been worse--he did stop himself from going in and raising holy heck with Kevin.

Kevin's new extracurricular course does kind of follow off some of the themes we talked about after the last chapter, with his interest in finding more about his grandfather. It's certainly an interesting contrast, with Kevin interested in exactly the parts of his heritage that Carlos is deeply embarrassed/ annoyed by.

Aww, Kevin, he's just the best. Warm fuzzies all over. Also, I really hope Beth whacks some sense into Carlos.

This episode excites me because of the introduction of all the new characters (and one returning character in a new situation) that have entered Kevin's life thanks to his new school, and promise many exciting and varied scenes to come during the series.

When I first heard about the idea of Michael, it was clear to me that Kevin would just have to beat him in an arm-wrestle at some point (it's only fitting after all the recreational arm-wrestling Kevin has enjoyed that he puts his skills to good use when appropriate) so I was pleased to see it happen in this episode.

I also enjoy the nostalgia (and horror) of the first day at Big School (much of which is specific to our school, of course, and Kevin's lunch queue experiences are specific to my own, as Rosey was sensible enough never to attempt to use the cafeteria) and I can't help feeling extremely glad that such experiences are now long behind me!

Thanks for your comments, guys. Carl certainly has his moments in this one, good and bad. Unfortunately for him, he finished this story on a low note, but who knows what the future may bring? (Well, Jake and I do actually. :D )

I've just edited my announcement of the episode, because I noticed that I was promising yet another episode 3 at the end of October. Fritz, if you wouldn't mind editing the same mistake over at GBFans, I'd be very grateful (in future I'll try hard not to need an edit every time - mustn't take your powers for granted!).

Episode 4: October - All in a Day's Work, by Jake.

Carl, as the first step on his journey to gaining his shield, spends a day shadowing a pair of detectives in the Fifteenth Precinct. When they begin to unravel a murder, the victim's circumstances remind Carl of his own worries.

Next month:
Episode 5: November - Come Hell or High Water, by me.

I won't go into the why it took me so long to get back on this one (at least not on this thread), but the second I saw this paragraph:

Quote:
'It's a day's secondment to another department, not work experience,' said Beth. 'The Fifteenth Detective Squad has one of the highest clean-up rates in the city, doesn't it? It's a fantastic opportunity for you to start getting the experience you need so you can get your hands on that gold shield.'

I was going "NYPD Blue crossver?!" I did watch the show for the first three years or so it was on, so I did know some of the characters, though the ones more specific to the c.1999 status quo not so much. A lot of fun watching Carlos Rivera, who can be sort of a jerk, playing off Sipowitz, who can also be sort of a jerk...part of the fun was seeing the different ways they were jerks. (But yikes, the civil libertarian in me winced a few times when Sipowitz was abusing his witnesses/suspects...but true to the character as I recall)

Carlos's reaction to the dirty magazine Beth found, though...not the most enlightened reaction, of course, but true to character and downright hilarious. Even more so when he embarrassed the hell out of Kevin offering to screen some lesbian porn for him.

Nicely done! And Beth is right, Kevin is totally a better man than Carlos!

Thanks again for your comments, guys. Fritz, I'm particularly glad that you got some amusement out of this story.

It happened because, when I was envisioning the series, I said there should be an episode about Carl doing some police work, so then Jake said he wanted to do it as an NYPD Blue crossover. And this is it. 8-)

This was the first idea I ever had for an episode of The Riveras that I thought I could actually sit down and force out of my brain (plenty of other inspiration did follow, thankfully) but upon its release, I was worried that it might have turned out rather too niche. It's not the first NYPD Blue crossover I've ever tried, as most of what I think I know about the USA comes either from that show or from ER, but I thought perhaps it was dwarfing the actual "Riveras" aspect of the series.

Upon re-reading, I satisfied myself that the story does deal closely with some of the recurring themes from the series, including Carl's feelings about Kevin's multifaceted growth spurt that he's currently on, as well as links to Carl's own race consciousness, which always struck me as being a very prominent concern of many of the NYPD Blue characters, even if the show was not actually specifically dealing with racism at the time, although it did do that a great deal!

However, it was only when I read your comments, Fritz, that I was relieved and fully satisfied that the episode is okay. I'm so, so glad that you got why I thought it would be both doable and appropriate to stick Carl in the mix with Andy Sipowicz, and that you enjoyed and understood the significance of the ending with Carl and Kevin. So thank you, thank you for making me feel that the story did hit its mark after all! :D

And yes, it's true that Kevin might be a more complete man than his father in several physical and emotional ways at this stage of the proceedings, but you can be sure that there's still a huge journey for them both to go on in this series, and things may well change for them both in many hopefully interesting ways.

Episode 5: November - Come Hell or High Water, by me.

Eduardo and Kylie are in the north of England to experience the Whitby Goth Weekend. They are looking forward to spending time together, but find they must put their plans on hold when Kylie becomes concerned by a pair of vampire enthusiasts.

Next month:
Episode 6: December - Christmas Yet to Come, by Jake.

I sympathise with Eduardo because he has exactly the same holiday problems as I do - low ceilings with even lower light fittings, and slipping on Whitby's East Cliff.

Whitby is such an interesting place with a truly unique feel to it. I find it very easy to believe that the events of this story might actually happen there. (Though maybe there wouldn't actually be a vampire.) Having said that, I hope Garrett will finally accept this sequence of events as irrefutable proof that real vampires exist, and so a loose end from the first virtual season (and, indeed, the real season) is nicely tied up.

Eduardo and Kylie certainly deserved their episode in the spotlight at this stage in the series, and I'm really glad to see how happy they are in each other's company while still maintaining their old vibe. I look forward to seeing them back with the rest of the family next time, for my first attempt at a true all-cast episode.

I have no words. It kept me hooked to the end. There was a disturbing lack of Carmilla and Varney though.

I know I joked after the first chapter "I kept waiting for a ghost to show up" , so I was kinda glad when...well, I mean, it's not a ghost, per se, but a supernatural creature for a pair of Ghostbusters to outwit in-between all the meaty characterization. Liked some of the meta commentary about "Just which vampire rules does this one follow anyway?" And since it took place in 1999, no crap about the vampires sparkling either.

Episode 6: December - Christmas Yet to Come, by Jake.

The school play is causing problems for Kevin, and this time Eduardo's advice may not fix everything. Meanwhile, Kylie has an invitation to join the Riveras' Christmas, but other family ties are holding her back.

Next month:
Episode 7: January - Friends for Life, by Jake and me.
