Well, I did put this in the description of this forum:



The PhpBB Group is scheduled to release the latest version of their software, PhpBB 3.1.0, on October 28. It's been in development since 3.0.0 released almost seven years ago, and entered the Alpha stage early this year. I've been running a 3.1.x board on my localhost since Beta 3, back in May.

It's a bigger change than just updating the board from a 3.0 version to another 3.0 (the current incarnation is 3.0.12), but not as large as the change from 2.0.x to 3.0.x was. I'm planning to do this upgrade on Sunday, November 2nd, after I change back to the Ecto Green style.

I've already created all of the styles the Ectozone and GBWC message boards use for 3.1.x thanks to the Beta and RC releases. You will notice a few differences in functionality, and some stuff might be moved, but it's a subtle change.

In case it isn't clear, all of the posts and users should not be affected. It all will be there; I'm not restarting the board whole cloth, just upgrading it's software.

This means the board will go offline for a while on November 2nd as I do the upgrade. If there's any problem doing so, the 3.0.12 files will not be affected, and I can switch back to it if necessary.

Ehgh.

I did the 3.1.0 conversion on the same localhost test board I've been using since Beta 3, and it worked just fine.

Then I basically created an all-new test board, updating straight from 3.0.12 to 3.1.0 using a copy of the database I made just two days ago, with a fresh install of the 3.1.0 files.

Gives me error messages.

Switched back to the files I'd been using since Beta 3.

Still the same error message.

Will try again tomorrow. If it doesn't work, I guess I have to bug the guys at PhpBB. I don't really want to try a live conversion until I have a successful one on my local machine.

After some retries, I wonder if the problem isn't in my server emulator.

I'm seriously contemplating attempting the conversion of the GBWC board later today; if it works, all will be good for the Ectozone attempt tomorrow.

And as previously mentioned, if there's a problem, the 3.0.12 files won't be affected, and I can continue to run that version until I really do figure it out.

Nah. I never really found the need to do so.

Real life has delayed my intent on getting the 3.1x upgrade done. I may get the GBWC board done tonight, and the Ectozone tomorrow. If I can't get to the GBWC tonight, we'll see about tomorrow.

It's funny; after all the trouble I had doing the 3.0.12 to 3.1.0 conversion on my localhost, on the actual GBWC server it went smooth as glass.

I'm shooting to give the conversion of the Ectozone a try tomorrow.

I said it'd be a subtle change--I made the new style as close to the 3.0x version as possible for just that reason. I guess the only obvious thing looking at the forum mainpage is the title of the topic last posted on shows up along with the date of the post and the person who posted it.
